Clinical area
Dr. Mariano de Prado introduced percutaneous foot surgery (minimally invasive foot surgery) to the field of trauma medicine and orthopaedic surgery in Europe, disseminating it across Europe and Latin America through intense teaching, research and care work, and by publishing the first treatise on this surgery in the Spanish and English languages, he has established the current bases for the development of these techniques and has attracted over 500 specialists from across the world to train in this field.
Professional experience
- During his training as a specialist, Dr. Mariano de Prado spent time at different hospital centres in Europe and the United States, such as Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute (Bologna, Italy), Hamburg University Polyclinic Hospital (Germany), and Spokane Foot and Ankle Centre (Washington, USA).
- He is currently collaborating with other centres, participating in training and exchange programmes for the development of new minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery techniques, including Bordeaux University Hospital (France), Basildon University Hospital London (United Kingdom), and Coeur d’Alene Surgical Foot and Ankle Centre (Idaho, USA).
- Since 1982, he has worked as Co-Director of Trauma Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery at Quirónsalud Murcia Hospital, a teaching and research centre of excellence which has collaboration agreements with hospitals and universities across the world, a European teaching centre of reference for the American Academy of Ambulatory Foot and Ankle Surgery; and he is the Co-founder and current Vice-President of the Amical Foundation (Medical Association for the Research and Development of Locomotor System Sciences), which researches therapeutic solutions for diseases of the locomotor system.

- Member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Society for Foot and Ankle Medicine and Surgery, Member of the Drafting Committee of the Foot and Ankle Journal of the SEMCPT and of the Spanish Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma Medicine (SECOT).
- Honorary Member of the Mexican Society for Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Surgery and of the Research and Study Group for Minimally Invasive Foot Surgery, France.
- European President of the American Academy of Ambulatory Foot and Ankle Surgery, by whom he was appointed Professor of Surgery in 2001.
- 2008: MAPFRE Foundation Prize for Applied Trauma Medicine Development, for his work on the use of adult stem cells in joints.

- Author of many chapters in different treatise and books on the speciality, of numerous scientific articles in national and international journals and many presentations at conferences across the world.
- Author of the books ‘PERCUTANEOUS SURGERY OF THE FOREFOOT’ (2003)* and MINIMALLY INVASIVE FOOT SURGERY (2009)*, which have been used to establish the anatomical and surgical bases of Minimally Invasive Surgery and have become consultation books for hundreds of surgeons that perform or want to start practising these surgical techniques.
