Dr. Jesús Lafuente Baraza
Dr. Lafuente, MD, FRCSEd, FRCS Glas, PhD, is a renowned specialist and the chief of the neurosurgery department at Sagrat Cor University Hospital and the director of the spine unit at Hospital del Mar, in Barcelona, Spain.
Dr. Lafuente has been a member of the "Ethics and Bylaws" committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) for 8 years. In 2008 he was part of the teaching staff of the initial course of the Column section of the EANS. Moreover, he was a professor in the spine section of the WFNS which he left when he was elected president of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (2015-2019).
Graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), he studied the specialty in the United Kingdom, where he lived for more than 10 years. He is the author of 8 chapters in specialized books on spinal pathology, in addition to having made numerous national and international publications. In 2003, he was recognized with the "Mario Boni Award" for the best research paper presented at the Congress of the European Society for Cervical Spine Research (CSRS). He is a member of various medical societies and is part of the group of spine experts as neurosurgeon specialized in spine, the treatment of Arnold Chiari malformation, syringomyelia and lumbar disc herniation.
His special interests include skull base neurosurgery, chiari and syringomyelia, spinal deformity, spinal tumors, degenerative disease and to perform surgeries in developing countries.
