Dr. Alberto Forteza Gil has a degree in Medicine from the University of Salamanca, where he received his doctorate cum laude with a study on coronary surgery without extracorporeal circulation.

He completed his specialty in Cardiovascular Surgery at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid. He has completed his training in centers of excellence in the specialty: Toronto General Hospital, Hannover Medical School and Mayo Clinic Minnesota.

Dr. Forteza is an expert in aortic surgery and valve repair, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy surgery, complex surgery of infectious endocarditis and coronary surgery, having one of the largest series in the world in some of them. One of his specialties is Marfan Syndrome, having been director of the first Marfan Unit in Spain and actively collaborating with the main national and European research centers on this disease.

Professional experience

He has been head of the Cardiac Surgery Service at the Puerta de Hierro University Hospital between 2015 and 2024, During this time, he has directed one of the most prestigious transplant programs in our country (implantation of the first heart supported by an ex vivo perfusion system, performance of the first transplant from a non-cardiac donation).

From 2006 to the present, he is head of the Cardiac Surgery Service at the Quironsalud Madrid University Hospital and La Luz University Hospital.

Membership in scientific societies

He has been president of the Section of Aortic Pathology and Valvulopathies of the Spanish Society of Cardiology between 2022-2024.

Dr. Forteza is a member of several scientific societies, including the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons (2021) and the European Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Research and teaching

He is the author of more than 100 indexed publications, principal investigator in 9 funded research projects, 5 of them public, and principal investigator of three multicenter international research projects. He is the author of 118 presentations at national conferences, 133 national conferences, 22 international conferences and 25 presentations at international conferences. He has directed six national courses and three international courses on aortic valve repair surgery.
