Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is a diagnostic tool that combines traditional bronchoscopy and ultrasonograpy, allowing direct vision of ultrasound images of the lung and mediastinum (lymph nodes and great vessels). With this exploration, cytological samples can be taken by transbronchial puncture (TBNA) both from the mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes as well as from the surrounding lung parenchyma. It is indicated in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer, in the diagnosis of mediastinal lesions and in inflammatory or infectious diseases that affect the mediastinum, such as sarcoidosis or tuberculosis. EBUS is a very safe technique, with a high diagnostic yield and does not require hospital admission, which is why it is currently a fundamental pillar in the diagnostic management of many lung diseases.
