Professional experience

Dr. Schäfers has extensive experience in the treatment of cardiac diseases. He has worked as a cardiac surgeon at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Medical School of Hannover, Germany, after which he was appointed interim director of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospitals of Saarland Homburg, also in Germany. He currently combines his work as a surgeon at Quirónsalud Madrid with that of director of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospitals of Saarland, Homburg, Germany.

Dr. Schäfers is one of the world's leading experts in aortic valve repair, with one of the largest series of patients treated worldwide. Valve repair allows for the correction of damaged tissue defects while preserving the patient's valve. This procedure avoids complications resulting from implanting a prosthetic material in the patient (mechanical valve), and allows the patient to avoid lifelong anticoagulant treatment that would be necessary if the patient underwent valve replacement.
